So disposable coffee cups annoy just about everybody, not just Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. As a nation we use 7 million disposable coffee cups EVERY day – that is 2.5 billion a year. That is just plain crazy and it doesn’t take a genius to work out the impact that is going to have on the environment. And don’t get us started about the lids, the stirrers and those gargantuan plastic smoothie cups!

We buy James Wellbeloved dog food anyway because frankly, it is a great product, but when somebody asked about buying dog food in recyclable packaging it got me thinking! I had always assumed the packaging was paper, and therefore recyclable, but I thought I had better check! And here is what I was told! Disappointing!
Whether you have a shoe collection of Imelda Marcos sized-proportions, or see them as a functional item to protect your feet, we all have shoes. And at some point those shoes will come to the end of their useful life to you. But what happens to them then? What should we do with our pile of unwanted shoes?
Well, rubber is in fact recyclable strictly speaking, but you would need an awful lot of them to make it worth anybody’s while. Some people may even say it’s compostable given that it is originally made from a natural product, but the processing it goes through to form it into products can make it very slow or even impossible to decompose.
Many charities collect bottle tops, and particularly milk bottle tops to raise funds. It is worth keeping an eye out for collections in your area on social media, etc. We have listed here those that we are aware of. Charities can often receive up to £30 for every 500kgs of bottle tops collected and are always looking for bulk. It is possible to set up your own scheme and collect for a charity of your choice as well.

Anybody else planning to hit the PYO establishments this weekend and gather some beautiful strawberries? The weather is looking lovely, and the strawberry season is in full flow!! But don’t you find they sometimes go off more quickly than you can eat them. And doesn’t chopping the top off and throwing so much deliciousness away really bug you!
